Two different investors of Chinese origin have put a magnifying glass on the coal mining region of Coahuila, in order to inject US$30 million dollars in the construction of a coal coking plant.

“There is an investment in the making; two Chinese investors are very interested in setting a coking plant up. They are to come in early 2019 to evaluate the region and we are confident that it will happen and that this will strongly strengthen the coal sector,” said Jaime Guerra Perez, Secretary of Economia y Turismo of the entity.

The investors’ intentions are to enhance the calorific value of coal and thereby create products such as methanol, ammonium sulfate, tar, tooth sulfur paste, and benzene.

“For every million tons of coke, 120,000 tons of methanol, 15,600 tons of ammonium sulfate, 54,000 tons of tar, 2,400 of dental sulfur paste and 15,200 tons of benzene are generated. This opens up another market in the region.”

Professionals from the Research Center in Applied Geosciences of the Universidad Autonoma de Coahuila said that from the central region of the state on the border with Texas, United States, Coahuila is rich in two coal basins whose betas are divided into thermal and metallurgical coal.

Furthermore, Coahuila possesses coal reserves that allow the industry to continue extracting for more than 90 years and it has two power plants with a capacity to generate 2,600 megawatts of energy per year, which translates into 7.5% of Mexico’s energy.

During a meeting in Mexico City, the governor of Chihuahua, Javier Corral, explained to representatives of the Asociacion Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz (AMIA) his intentions to set up a new corridor for the installation of companies in the sector and, especially, to attract an automotive company that manufactures electric cars.

"We are making an effort in a commitment to the innovation and development of a research center, we are working alongside universities and training centers," Corral commented. He added that they seek to offer the competitiveness of the state's trained workforce and the connectivity it has with both the rest of Mexico and the United States.

The new corridor would be near Ciudad Juarez and it would have an extension of 500 hectares. "The future is in electric cars. California buys 35% of electric/hybrid cars sold in the United States," said a government presentation.

Sergio Mendoza, president of the Cluster Automotriz de Chihuahua, pointed out that the government can offer companies logistical incentives such as "payroll taxes, predial and funds for staff training." According to the executive, they have already talked to companies in Asia and Europe about the idea of adopting a company that produces electric vehicles.

With an investment of US$24 million, the automotive company Elektrokontakt inaugurated a plant in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, their fourth fully-functioning plant in Mexico. The company’s facilities were built at the Parque Industrial Amistad.

Vice president of Operations for Mexico, Luis Carrasco, highlighted the fact that the company currently has four plants, as previously stated, one in the municipality of Sabinas, Coahuila, and the other three in Piedras Negras. "We currently generate 2,000 jobs, but with the new plant that we inaugurated, we will be generating 800 more jobs in the following months," said the executive of the German-based company.

He stressed that most of the harnesses manufactured in their plants go to the United States, to different automotive companies but, with the new plant, the products will be sent to the city of Silao, Guanajuato, where General Motors is located.

Carrasco commented that Elektrokontakt currently operates in ten countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, China and Mexico, while the corporate headquarters are located in the United States.

The governor of Nuevo Leon, Jaime Rodriguez Calderon, informed that an investment of US$33 million is to be made for the construction of the Pollux photovoltaic plant in the municipality of Galeana. Rodriguez Calderon presented the project, which will strengthen the electricity grid in the region and help maintain a better quality in the electricity supply. Ultimately, the plant's purpose is to benefit the rural sector of southern Nuevo Leon.

"This is historic, no one has ever invested so much money in the southern part of the state," the governor said.

Rodriguez Calderon emphasized that the project will generate power of approximately 90.8 gigawatts, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 45,000 inhabitants. Jose Rodolfo Farias Arizpe, head of the Secretaria de Desarrollo Agropecuario of the state, stressed that the investment will boost the regional economy in the short term.

The photovoltaic plant will generate 300 direct jobs; however, construction and manufacturing companies are already in the process of getting hired.
