According to Ossie Diaz, director of Operations of Grupo Tacna, the company managed to land seven new investments in Baja California that resulted in the creation of more than 1,500 new jobs and more than US$200 million in investments, all throughout 2018. Diaz pointed out that Grupo Tacna is ready to face 2019 and to reach at least 10,000 new jobs so as to consolidate as one of the largest employers in Baja California.

"Despite the uncertainty that the transition of the new government has caused, Grupo Tacna is focused on bringing more investments to the state, which will result in the creation of thousands of jobs," Diaz said.

On the other hand, he assured that everything is ready in order to employ hundreds of Central Americans, as long as Mexican authorities expedite immigration procedures and documents for them to legally work in the country.

Ossie Diaz, who also serves as Chairman of the Security Committee at Parque Industrial Baja Maq, will be jointly working with the Asociacion de Desarrollo Economico e Industrial de Tijuana (Deitac), a global investment promotion agency of which he is a part of, in order to attract new investments to the entity.

While Diaz didn’t give any names out; he said that, during the first three months of 2019, new investments in the medical and furniture sectors will be announced.

The governments of Arizona and New Mexico, as well as the government of Sonora, located in northern Mexico, all agreed to meet the growing demand for energy in Asia through the supply of natural gas.

Furthermore, the government of Sonora reported in a press release that the heads of said entities, Claudia Pavlovich, Sonora’s governor; Susana Martinez, New Mexico’s governor and Doug Ducey, Arizona’s governor, have signed the memorandum of understanding in the city of Phoenix.

The natural gas supply, which New Mexico will provide, will be delivered through pipelines and liquefied natural gas facilities to be developed in the port of Guaymas, Sonora, to be later sent to Asia.

Governor Moreno indicated that the excellent relationship with Sonora and Arizona allowed them to export their natural gas, in a more economic and quick fashion, to Asia, mainly to Taiwan. In this sense, Moreno highlighted that this arrangement will be a great step for the development of the three regions.

Doug Ducey stressed that this agreement is of great importance and shows the security, commitment and development that exists between Sonora and Arizona, in addition to the teamwork that New Mexico and Arizona have had over the years.

The state leaders reiterated their commitment to collaborate in the promotion of investment, research and innovation, their intention to collaborate in the planning, management, promotion, and execution of projects for the sale of LNG to multiple global markets.

As President Donald Trump has made statements about possibly shutting down the border’s garitas if the US Congress doesn’t fund the construction of the iconic wall, the Asociacion de Desarrollo Economico e Industrial de Tijuana (Deitac) is already exploring possibilities regarding whether the construction of a maritime bridge connecting Ensenada, Baja California, and Long Beach, California is possible or not.

Gilbert Ulloa, Deitac’s vice president, explained that said bridge would allow for the merchandise between both countries to keep flowing.

“These statements that the president of the United States has made wouldn’t only affect Tijuana, but the country’s entire exports industry, so one of the alternatives we have in mind at Deitac is to generate synergy in order to create this maritime bridge from Ensenada’s port to Long Beach’s port,” Ulloa said.

Even if a complete garita shutdown seems improbable, due to the economic losses that would ensue for both Mexico and the United States, Deitac deems important to consider all possibilities when it comes to Ensenada’s industrial growth.

Nevertheless, Deitac is yet to have an official meeting with the authorities at Ensenada’s port.
